My dears … I fear it has come to the end of the line.

What else is there to say?

Well, I suppose I owe you more than that, dear diary, but truly there is nothing more to say.

It just occurred to me, about half an hour ago actually, that I could stop. And not finding the thought overwhelmingly abhorrent, it came to seem like a good idea. Which is, in itself, I think, argument enough for stopping. Ye Gods, I sound like Tithonus.

I’ve been writing here for what feels like a long time. And my life trails behind me like a tail, gathering dust and dirt and dragging ever heavier. Yes, indeed, it’s time to stop.

I started writing because I wanted to remember. And I wanted to understand. Now I do understand, at least more than I did, and I rather want to forget. I’ve moved so far beyond who I was when first I started writing and along the way I’ve upset a lot of people with this in various ways, hopefully not maliciously but certainly heedlessly. And I think it’s time to stop hurting people with heedless words. Also I’ve become more conscious of audience than ever I intended. What began as a mirror has become just another reflection.

It’s time to cut myself free.

I sort of inspired myself with this strange little burble while complaining about the heat in Oxford, in t'other place. I've never been to the desert, of course, but I suppose I'd like to.

It is the hottest and driest of Deserts. The daytime temperature can reach 131 degrees Fahrenheit and the constant force of the winds that blow over its surface can create dunes over 650 feet high. It is largely unexplored.

It is three hours after dawn. The heat is unbearable but it will only get hotter. To move in the desert is to battle through a suffocating syrup of heat and dust wrapped in a shroud of sweat. As far as the naked eye can see there is nothing for there is nothing that the naked eye can see - only blinding patterns of oscillating light stabbing remorselessly under the guard of raw, weary eyelids and lashes heavy with grit. The nostrils are seared with every inhalation, which seems to draw, not oxygen, but liquid lead into the lungs. The lips, tongue, throat are so parched that they have passed into a numbness beyond pain. The ears hear nothing but the sound of laboured breathing amplified by the cloth that of necessity must be securely bound over nose and mouth. The sound of the breath trapped in this way makes that most natural and automatic of human responses, strained and self-conscious. The more the ears monitor the breath, the harder it becomes to breathe.

It is time to stop but not to rest or sleep. There can be neither rest nor sleep in this boiling cauldron of treacherous, shifting, sameness. And sleep too readily shades into death. In the desert, consciousness is an achievement to be prized and every moment of it is precious. But consciousness of what? For the desert annihilates the body, obliterates the senses and invalidates all the concerns of civilised men.

As it was in the beginning and will be at the end, Life and Death are the only issues now. And the Desert demands much more than mere animal endurance as the price of survival. It embodies truths that must be learned. In the desert there is only one God and He is all powerful. This is not some questionable, quasi-mystical speculation or vision but a manifest fact. His presence, His power is scorching the flesh, blistering the brain, igniting the spirit. This is truth and it must be accepted and proclaimed by making every tortured movement an act of worship, every agonised breath a hymn of praise and every tormented thought a prayer of supplication. For it is only through complete surrender to the power of the Absolute that the True Believer can know his mercy, when at the appointed time and place - He sets.
